PELT

"P-U-N-G"

One of the joys of reviewing music is that occasionally you come across a little gem. One such "little gem" is the strangely titled "P-U-N-G" from the affable Cornish pop combo PELT.

PELT in recent years have built up quite a reputation as a live act not to be missed, I have seen them on several occasions, and have always been impressed by their performances. The strengths of their live performances are very evident on P-U-N-G which I think is a superbly constructed cd, it has the basic ingredient for success, good solid song writing with variety.

The songwriter in question is Bridgitte Rogers, a talented lady from Falmouth who is lucky enough to have a sister Lana, a wonderful singer to convey the words. With the excellent bass playing of Rob Carter, aided by Matt Buckett on drums and Jooli on keyboards this makes P-U-N-G a very powerful album.

Most of the songs on the cd are from Bridgittes experiences of life. My favourite is the delicious "Toffee apples" a whimsical tale of the Rogers sisters in their younger days wanting everything. At Christmas. The girls used to tick off everything in the Argos catalogue only to be given toffee apples on Christmas morning (at first).

The cd is filled with songs of the same calibre, such as "Someone like you" a simple love song, "High and Blue summer sky" which is pure pop in the Cardigans vein. "Sleeping" lets Jooli come to the forefront to display her keyboard skills. The song was co-written with Tony Butler of Big Country fame a long time admirer of the band who also produced the cd. "Free me" allows Bridgitte to show us her hidden talent, her guitar playing; she is so underrated it verges on the criminal!

To sum up; P-U-N-G is a superb cd which seems destined for commercial success and would grace anyone's collection. Melodic sounds with a solid spine. Excellent: I for one wish them well.
